Are you considering applying for a BHSDG grant? Start here.
IMPORTANT: In October 2025, the Monthly Grants DEADLINE WILL CHANGE to the 8th of every month. If you are applying in September 2025, the deadline will be September 15. If you are applying in October, the deadline will be October 8.
The Berkeley High School Development Group’s (BHSDG) mission is to support and strengthen the educational experience of all Berkeley High School students, including students at Berkeley Technology Academy and Berkeley Independent Studies.
We provide Monthly Grants that respond to emerging requests from students, teachers, and staff. These grants often help to bridge an urgent gap, or meet a timely need or opportunity.
In addition to Monthly Grants, BHSDG provides annual support for a limited number of projects/programs through its Board-Sponsored Grants. These are determined by the BHSDG Board each June with funds made available for the subsequent year. Examples include the BHS Afterschool Tutoring Program, First Steps Scholarships, and Classroom Grants–funds provided to every classroom teacher for supplies.
Please review the FAQs below before you apply for a Monthly Grant.

Grant Requests - Additional Information
Who Can Apply?
Any Berkeley High School, Berkeley Technology Academy or Berkeley Independent Study (9-12) teacher, student, or staff member may apply.
What Gets Funded?
BHSDG grants funds for a wide range of projects, including technology, tutoring, theater and art projects, community building activities, field trips, conferences, mental health support, and more. Please note, we do not provide funding retroactively, therefore grants for projects that have already occurred or items already purchased will not be considered.
Is There a Maximum Grant Amount?
The BHSDG Board will consider grants up to a maximum of $10,000. Please contact Principal Raygoza with any grant requests about $10,000.
How Are Decisions Made?
The BHSDG Board reviews proposals at monthly meetings. Please review the attached grant evaluation tool for more specific criteria.
Are there cost guidelines for field trips, conferences, and guest speakers?
Yes, please review the attached document to be sure that your request is within the guidelines.
How Will I Be Notified?
Applicants are generally notified via email within 48-72 hours of the board meeting at which the grant is considered. The Board occasionally reviews a grant proposal over multiple meetings. To check the status of your application, email grants@bhsdevelopmentgroup.org after our monthly board meeting, which typically occurs the first Monday of the month.
How Do I Get Reimbursed?
Complete the General Fund Payment Request Form online.
What If I Don’t Spend All My Grant Money?
Grant funds must be spent before the end of the school year for which the grant is made unless an extension is requested and approved; no funds roll over for use during the following school year. Unspent funds return to the BHSDG general fund.
Can I Apply More Than Once?
Yes. BHSDG seeks to distribute funds equitably and to provide the most benefit to the largest number of students. Some departments and teachers have received multiple grants in a single year, and we have funded some projects for successive years. However, once a BHSDG-funded pilot program is successfully established, we expect the program to seek institutional funding. Additionally, Grant Reports are required within 30 days of the end of the project/grant and are necessary in order to be eligible for future funding.
